Students from around the country arrived on August 1st to be part of the inaugural class of the first college of its kind for young people with developmental disabilities.  This three-year post-secondary program helps students make a successful transition from school to work and from home to independent living.  The day for the new students started with a tour and orientation before they were able to “settle in” to their apartments in Clark Hall.  They met their roommates, Shepherds College staff, faculty and other members of the Shepherds team as well as a number of our current residents.  A special picnic was arranged for parents, students, faculty and staff of Shepherds College on Saturday, August 2nd.  On Sunday, August 3rd, parents said goodbye to these students.  Monday, August 4th, classes started at 9:00 a.m.  The students were so excited that they arrived early and had a chance to get to know each other.
This semester brings a challenging set of classes for the students to conquer.  In Language Arts, the students are working on writing news articles.  They did an interview, gave an oral report, and have been working on learning the different parts of speech.  So far students have studied Genesis through Exodus and have learned important foundational information in Old Testament.  Every Thursday in cooking class, students prepare a meal and then eat it for supper.  Recently, the students made cream puffs and spaghetti.  In Life Skills, students are learning how to make good choices at the grocery store.  They read food labels, learned how to pick out fresh produce and meat, and how to get the most for their money.  Chapel consists of learning about God’s attributes.  Lately, they have discussed God as the Creator, Author of the Bible, Eternal and All-Powerful.  The students memorize a Bible verse every 2 weeks that correlates with what they are learning.  They also have classes in Personal Development, Laundry and Home Care, Discipleship, Math and Computer Skills.  Though these classes may be challenging at times, the students are learning both academic and life skills.
Applications are currently being accepted for Shepherds College students.  The class is expected to include 12-15 students.  Those interested in receiving more information about Shepherds College are encouraged to contact Mr. Chris Wright, Admissions Director, at 262.878.5620, ext. 248, or by email at cwright@shepherdsministries.org.
